Rams Take Top Spot in Skyline Preseason Coaches Poll

New York, N.Y. - Five-time defending champion Farmingdale State has been selected to capture the 2012 Skyline women's soccer title in voting conducted by the league's nine head coaches.

The Rams garnered five first-place votes and tallied 61 points to edge Mount Saint Mary (60 points), which earned four first-place votes. Farmingdale welcomes back the reigning Skyline Rookie of the Year, Andrea Kiefer, and senior forward Corine Magee, a first-team All-Conference selection who was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 Skyline Championship after leading FSC to a 1-0 win over the Knights.

The Rams open the 2012 schedule when they host the 4th Annual Rams Classic on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1, featuring top Division III schools Salve Regina, Western Connecticut, Geneseo, Salisbury and Buffalo State. Farmingdale State will face Buffalo State on Friday at Noon and Salve Regina on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. After the season-opening tourney, the Rams have a tough schedule lined up as they match up with four Nationally ranked opponents, including #16 Cal Lutheran, #18 Stevens, #19 Ithaca and #22 Cortland.

MSMC will be led by a trio of juniors in goalkeeper Jacquelyn Mancini, defender Tara McDermott and midfielder Sara Sheehan. All three standouts earned First-Team All-Skyline recognition last season.

Old Westbury finished third in the voting with 47 points, followed by St. Joseph's-L.I. (44), The Sage Colleges (34), Purchase (33), Maritime (21), Mount Saint Vincent (15) and NYU-Poly (9). Maritime senior Jorrie Trenkamp is the league's leading returning scorer after tallying 20 goals and 45 points a year ago.

The quarterfinals of the six-team Skyline Women's Soccer Championship will be held on Saturday, October 27th, with the semifinals scheduled for Wednesday, October 31st. The title match will be played on Saturday, November 3rd.
