Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's soccer team finished the 2011 season with a 15-4-3 overall record. The Rams defeated Mount Saint Mary College, 1-0, in the conference finals to capture their fifth consecutive Skyline Championship. Farmingdale State earned the Skyline Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
In the first round of the NCAA Tournament held at Amherst College, the Rams faced Misericordia. Farmingdale State held the Cougars scoreless in the first half, but a Misericordia goal less than two minutes after halftime turned out to be the games only score.
The Rams had eight players receive All-Skyline Conference honors this season. The First Team consisted of senior defender Katrina Cerverizzo (Center Moriches, N.Y.), junior forward Corine Magee (Mastic, N.Y.), junior midfielder Jamie Smith (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and junior defender Jillian Lasota (Massapequa, N.Y.). Junior forward Theresa Martorano (Commack, N.Y.), junior midfielder Christina Merrill (Levittown, N.Y.) and senior goalkeeper Amanda Maass (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) were each named to the Second Team. Freshman Andrea Kiefer (Centereach, N.Y.) was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year.
Cerverizzo, Magee, Smith and Lasota were each also named Second Team ECAC Metro All-Stars.
Cerverizzo was named to the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Women's Soccer All-East Region Team. This was her third consecutive season receiving All-Region honors; however, this year she received First Team honors. She led the team in goals with 12 and was tied for second with 25 points this season. Cerverizzo leaves Farmingdale State as the all-time leading scorer with 87 points (37 goals, 10 assists). She also holds the school-record for career game winning goals (11) and games started (85).
Magee, the Skyline Tournament MVP, scored 11 goals (three game winners) and tallied 25 points this year, while Smith had eight goals as well as a team and conference leading 10 assists.
Lasota started every game on defense and helped the Rams to allow only 13 goals in 22 games played.
Senior midfielder Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y.) started all 22 games and scored six goals, including one game winner. Senior Shannon Kalogeras (patchogue, N.Y.), a four-year starter, anchored Farmingdale State's defense as she played in 78 games throughout her career.
The Rams look for continued success and their sixth straight Skyline Conference Championship in 2012.
