2010 Women's Soccer Season Recap
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's soccer team finished the 2010 season with a 17-5 overall record, including 9-1 in the Skyline Conference. The Rams earned the #2 seed in the playoffs and defeated Bard 2-0 in the semifinals and Mount Saint Mary 1-0 in the finals en route to their fourth consecutive Skyline Conference Championship. The Rams earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
In the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, Farmingdale State traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to take on the 12th ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University. The Rams allowed only two first half goals, but fell 2-0 to the Blue Jays
Farmingdale State had five players named to the All-Skyline Conference Team. Sophomore forward Christina Merrill (Levittown, N.Y.) was the Skyline Conference Player of the Year, while junior defender Katrina Cerverizzo (Center Moriches, N.Y.) earned First Team All-Skyline honors. Sophomore defender Jillian Lasota (Massapequa, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Jamie Smith (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and freshman forward Sarah Golden (Greenport, N.Y.) each received Second Team honors.
Merrill scored eight goals and assisted 13 for a team-high 29 points this season. She led the Skyline Conference with her 13 assists and was named Skyline Player of the Week once this year.
Cerverizzo, the Conference Tournament's Most Valuable Player, finished with two goals and seven assists. Cerverizzo was named Skyline Player of the Week twice and her goal with 3:22 remaining in the Skyline Finals clinched the Rams fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Lasota led the Skyline's top-ranked defense and netted four shots from her defensive position. Smith scored seven goals and had three assists for 17 points, which was fourth best on the team. Golden, in her first season with the Rams, was tied for a team-high nine goals scored. Golden also recorded eight assists, finishing three points behind Merrill.
Sophomore forward Corine Magee (Mastic, N.Y.) played in 20 games, scoring nine goals, two of which were game-winners. Sophomore forward Melissia Elie (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored a career-high seven goals this season for Farmingdale State.
Senior Anna-Marie Rivera (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored four goals and had two assists.
Farmingdale State will look for their fifth straight Skyline Championship in the 2011 season.
