#6 Herons Defeat Rams in Second Game at Heron Cup

- Rams Hold 6th Ranked Herons Scoreless in First Half -

Geneva, N.Y. –

Senior BreLynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the No. 6 William Smith soccer team to a 3-0 win over visiting Farmingdale State in the final game of the 2010 Heron Cup this afternoon. The Herons improve to 5-0-0 this season. The loss was the first for the Rams (5-1-0).

After a scoreless first half, Nasypany broke through in the 70th minute. Sophomore Renee Jensen (White Plains/White Plains, N.Y.) sent a beautiful pass across the front of the goal to find Nasypany on the left side. Nasypany then put a shot past the Farmingdale goalkeeper for what ended up as the game-winner. In the 83rd minute, Nasypany struck again. This time she broke through the Rams defense and found the back of the net on a breakaway. It was Nasypany's seventh goal this season. It was her 42nd career goal, which puts her tied for fourth on the all-time list.

A little over five minutes later, Nasypany sent a crossing pass in front of the goal to Sophomore Morgan Gibeault (Rutland/Mendon, Vt.) who sent a header into the back of the net for her second goal this season. The assist was the 23rd of Nasypany's career. She is now tied for fourth on the career assists list, and also ranks fourth on the career points list with 107.

The Herons had many opportunities to score before they finally broke through in the second half, as they outshot the Rams 17-9.  In the 56th minute, Nasypany fired a shot on goal and the Farmingdale keeper, junior  Amanda Maass, came out to make the save, but she couldn't hang on to the ball. Jensen was there to put another shot on right away, but Maass came up with another save. In the 67th minute, sophomore Emily D'Addario (Farmington/Farmington, Conn.)  took a shot from right in front, but Maass was there to make another big save for the Rams.

In the 80th minute, Farmingdale sophomore Theresa Martorano broke through the Heron defense for a one-on-one situation with William Smith goalie junior Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Landing, N.J.). Martorano fired a shot at goal, but Davis came out to make the big save.

Davis finished with four saves, and Maass turned aside seven shots for the Rams. The Herons earned five corner kicks, and Farmingdale recorded two.

William Smith will return to action on Sept. 17, when they host No. 14 Wheaton for another non-conference game at 4:30 p.m. Farmingdale will open their conference schedule on Sept. 16, when they host NYU-Poly at 4:30 p.m.
