Rams Drop Skyline Matchup to Merchant Marine

Merchant Marine - 70, Farmingdale State - 48


FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's basketball team hosted Skyline Conference opponent Merchant Marine this evening and fell, 70-48. The Rams dropped to 2-3 in the conference, while the Mariners improved to 3-1.

USMMA (6-1) led 10-5 midway through the first quarter before recording 13 unanswered points to jump ahead by 18.

The Mariners held a 17-point advantage to start the second and extended their lead to 21 at 27-6.

FSC (3-6) responded with a 3-pointers from both Emily Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) and Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) and two free-throws by junior forward Tiffany Sosa (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) to cut their deficit to 27-14.

Merchant Marine was ahead 38-21 at the halftime break before scoring six straight points to open the third quarter.

Following a 3-pointer by Kantzian, a 6-2 run put the Mariners in front 50-26.

USMMA took their largest lead of the game with 26 seconds to play in the third, when back-to-back jumpers put them in front by 25, 59-34.

The Mariners were outscored 11-12 in a low-scoring fourth quarter as they went on for the 70-48 victory.

Kantzian led Farmingdale State with 16 points off the bench, while Sosa registered 12 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) added five points and four assists.

Madison Demos had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Merchant Marine, while Lauren Hunter tallied 17 points and grabbed 12 boards.

FSC next heads on the road to play Skyline opponent Manhattanville on Saturday, December 10th at 2:00 p.m.
