Strong Second Half Leads Albertus Magnus to Win Over FSC

FARMINGDALE, NY | The Farmingdale State women's basketball team hosted Albertus Magnus College this afternoon for a non-conference game and fell, 85-71. The Falcons outscored the Rams 54-35 in the second half en route to the win.

Trailing 7-6 in the first quarter, FSC (0-3) freshman guard Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer before hitting two free-throws to go ahead, 11-7.

Albertus Magnus (1-0) was down by four, 13-9, and scored a pair of baskets at the end of the first quarter and one to open the second to jump in front, 15-13.

The Rams were down 19-18 and used back-to-back layups by junior forward Tiffany Sosa (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Jenna Pignataro (Farmingville, N.Y.) to take a six-point edge, 25-19.

After a 12-6 run by the Falcons tied the score at 31-31, Farmingdale State closed the half with five unanswered points, including three from junior forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.), to put the Rams ahead 36-31 at the break.

Albertus Magnus came out quick in the third quarter as they outscored FSC, 14-2, over the first 4:13 to go up, 45-38.

Mendoza cut the Rams deficit to three, 45-42, with a layup and a pair of free-throws, but the Falcons pulled ahead 51-42 after recording six straight points.

Farmingdale State trailed 67-57 with six minutes to play and were outscored 18-14 down the stretch as they fell, 85-71.

Mendoza recorded a season-high 28 points on 10-for-22 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks. Sosa and Kantzian tallied 12 points apiece off the bench, while sophomore guard Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) had eight points, four rebounds and a game-high six assists. 

Jakara Murray-Leach and Caitlyn Scott registered 29 and 21 points, respectively, for Albertus Magnus.

The Rams will next play host to Medgar Evers in a non-conference game on Wednesday, November 16th at 6:00 p.m.
