Hamel Tallies Game-Winner in Senior Day Win Over SJC-LI

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State sophomore forward Thomas Hamel (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 19:28 left to give the Rams a 3-2 Skyline Conference victory over St. Joseph's-Long Island this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y. With the win, the FSC men's soccer team improved to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in the conference.

Prior to the start of the game, seniors James Barrett (Wantagh, N.Y.), Scott Flores (Commack, N.Y.), William Grajales (Cali, Colombia), Kyle Gully (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Alejandro Juarez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) were each honored for senior day as they were playing in their final regular season home game.

St. Joe's-L.I. (8-7-1, 5-3-1 Skyline) got on the board first in the 10th minute after junior forward Damian Duda (Riverhead, N.Y.) stole the ball and scored from 10 yards out.

The score remained 1-0 until 2:54 remaining on the clock when junior forward Chris Schmidt (Massapequa, N.Y.) tied the game off the cross in front from sophomore defender Luis Steven Vasquez (Bay Shore, N.Y.).

Each team recorded seven shots in the first half, while FSC held the advantage in corner kicks, 3-1.

Only 3:44 into the second half, the Rams took a 2-1 lead on another goal from Schmidt off the double assist from junior midfielder Alec Chapoteau (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Barrett.

Just 28 seconds later, SJC-LI junior forward Rayneri Ruiz (Brentwood, N.Y.) set up Duda for his second score of the game from 10 yards out to knot the game at 2-2.

With 19:28 left in the contest, Hamel tallied the game-winning goal on the centering pass from Vasquez.

The Golden Eagles recorded seven shots over the remainder of the game but were unable to find the net as the Rams went on to win, 3-2.

Schmidt finished with a season-high four points on his two goals, while Vasquez (2a) and Hamel (1g) had two points apiece.

In goal, Flores and Golden Eagles sophomore Tyler Flaherty (Manorville, N.Y.) each had four saves.

Farmingdale State next travels to Maritime College for a conference game on Wednesday, October 24th at 7:30 p.m.
