Yingling Scores Pair as Merchant Marine Defeats Rams

Merchant Marine - 4, Farmingdale State - 1


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's soccer team hosted Merchant Marine in a Skyline Conference game this afternoon and fell, 4-1. Merchant Marine's Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, Md.) scored a game-high two goals in the victory.

In the 8th minute, the Mariners (9-4-2, 8-1) nearly broke the scoreless tie on a header by junior midfielder Alex Neimann (Valatie, N.Y.) but a diving save by Lucas Mallia (Greenlawn, N.Y.) kept the score at 0-0.

With 32:16 left to play in the first half, junior forward Jon Tarbox (Gettysburg, Penn.) scored off a cross in front from five yards out by Neimann to put the Mariners on top, 1-0. Only 5:09 later, FSC (7-6, 6-2) sophomore midfielder Christian Campos (Huntington Station, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal from 10 yards out to tie the game at 1-1. The game went into the break tied 1-1 despite the Mariners holding a 13-5 shot advantage in the half.

Merchant Marine struck quickly to start the second with a score from Yingling just 4:27 after halftime. Only 51 seconds later, the Mariners took a two-goal advantage as freshman midfielder Matt McCurnin (Newark, Del.) scored on a header in front off Austin Flores' (Wichita, Kan.) cross. In the 55th minute, Yingling intercepted an FSC pass in front of the net and converted the shot to increase the Merchant Marine lead to 4-1.

After the Mariners went ahead by three, neither team would score the remainder of the game.

The Rams next will travel to Old Westbury for a Skyline matchup on Tuesday, October 18th at 3:30 p.m.
