Rams Rally Falls Short

Massapequa, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team fell to 0-5 overall with a 12-11 loss to Vassar College (1-7) on Wednesday afternoon in a game at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa, N.Y.

The Rams opened the scoring with a man-up goal by junior Joe Meola (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) just four minutes in, assisted by junior Jeremy Goohs (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun). Vassar struck back with two goals to take the lead and junior Chris Fiorenzo (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) tied it up again with a Farmingdale goal at the 2:00 mark of the first period. The Brewers outscored the Rams 7-2 over the next 17 minutes of play to hold a 9-4 edge at the half.

At the beginning of the third, senior Ryan LaFlare (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) scored an unassisted goal at 11:20 and Goohs scored his first of the day just two minutes later off an assist by freshman Jon Trama (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon). Meola added his second and final goal of the day with 2:47 left in the third to make it 10-7 Vassar.

Farmingdale reeled off four more goals in the final period to rally and tie the game at 11 all. Goohs connected on two and Fiorenzo scored his second, before sophomore Anthony Jacobi (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) found the back of the net for the game tying shot with 3:39 remaining.

Vassar senior Vito Cataldo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) scored the eventual game-winner with 2:16 left in the fourth to make it a 12-11 final score.

Freshman goalie Ed Pappo (Malvern, Pa.) finished with 12 saves for Vassar, while sophomore Danny Keegan (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and senior Kevin Winters (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) each made five saves in 30 minutes of play for the Rams.

Farmingdale will host Manhattanville College on Sunday, March 25th at 1:00pm in their first Skyline Conference game of the season.
