Matthews Eclipses 1,000 Points in Win over Dolphins

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) became the 5th player since 2000 to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau on Saturday afternoon in Skyline Conference men's basketball action. He led the Rams with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the 62-49 victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Farmingdale State improved to 16-5, 12-2 win the win, while the Dolphins fell to 6-15, 3-11 in conference play.

Both teams struggled to get going in the first half, with the Rams shooting just 25-percent from the field, and the game was tied 21-21 at the break.

After falling behind by two in the early stages of the second half, Dolphins' junior forward Gerard Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied the game for the third time with a lay-in at the 16:52 mark. Farmingdale State answered with a quick 10-2 run to pull in front 33-25 with 13:09 left in regulation. Junior guard Curtis Williams (Stony Brook, N.Y.) accounted for eight of those 10 points for the Rams. Farmingdale would lead the rest of the way to secure their 12th Skyline victory of the season.

Matthews eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau with 32 seconds remaining in the second half, throwing down a dunk off a pass from junior guard Ryan Davis (Flushing, N.Y.). In 45 games played for the Rams, Matthews has scored 1,003 points, 691 rebounds and 144 blocks (school record). He is currently 5th all-time for career points and 2nd all-time for rebounds.

Farmingdale State will host St. Joseph's on Wednesday, February 6th at 8:00 p.m.
