Baseball 2004 Season Recap
The Men’s Baseball Team completed the 2004 season with a 12-18 record, including 9-11 and a 6th place finish in the Skyline Conference.
The highlight for the season was back to back no hitters on April 18th during a double header split against Conference opponent Manhattanville. Sophomore Jason Guichard and freshman Bill Jansen became the first ever Farmingdale pitchers to accomplish this feat. Guichard struck out five and walked two in seven innings in the Rams’ 1-0 victory in the opener, and Jansen had 12 strikeouts and five walks in 10 innings in a 2-1 loss in the second game.
Individually, the men had two players named to the All-Conference Teams, Jansen and junior Anthony Scali. Jansen was named First Team All-Skyline as he finished 3-3 on the mound with a 0.82 ERA and a total of 48 strikeouts. He is ranked 2nd nationally among Division III pitchers for ERA. Scali was named Second Team All-Skyline after leading the Rams with a .343 batting average, including 34 hits and 14 stolen bases. Scali also provided outstanding defense in the centerfield and at shortstop. Sophomore Robert Sobera led the team in RBI’s with 31, doubles with 10 and a slugging percentage of .506. Senior shortstop Ian Roche-Tilden finished the season with a .303 batting average and a team-high 22 stolen bases.
With only one senior on this year’s squad, there will likely be 18 returning players along with many incoming recruits.

Farmingdale State Baseball With Two All-Conference Selections
The Skyline All-Conference Selections were named on April 30th and two of our men’s baseball players picked up honors. Freshman Bill Jansen (West Hampton Beach, NY/West Hampton) was named to the Skyline All-Conference First Team and Junior Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) was named to the Skyline All-Conference Second Team. Jansen saw time on the mound as a starting pitcher, as well as at first base and as a designated hitter. He finished the season on the mound with a 3-3 record overall, a .278 batting average, including a 10-inning no-hitter against Manhattanville on April 17th. Scali led the team with a .343 batting average in his 30 games played, where he split time between shortstop and centerfield. He also led the team in hits (34) and on-base percentage (.414), as well as finishing second on the team in stolen bases with 14 and third with a slugging percentage of .394.

Farmingdale (8-15, 5-8 Skyline) was swept by Stevens Institute (17-12, 10-4 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 18th. Stevens took game one 11-5, as Gerard Moreno (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) pitched four innings and gave up only two runs, Ben Shaw (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion) came in after the fourth to pick up the save. The Rams Robert Sorbera (Fresh Meadows, NY/Cardozo) went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI’s.
In game two, Farmingdale led 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth before Stevens ripped a four run rally to take a 7-6 lead. Steven’s Shaw came in for relief to pitch 2.1 innings and was able to get the win, while Adam Sandt (Allentown, PA/William Allen) collected his fourth save. Wayde Anderson (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI’s for the Rams. Farmingdale’s Keith King (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) was 1-for-1 with 3 walks and 2 runs scored, while Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt and RBI.
The Rams take on St. Joseph’s College on Wednesday, April 21st at home for a 3:30pm game.

Rams Pitch Two No-Hitters in Conference Doubleheader

Farmingdale (7-12, 5-6 Skyline) pitchers Jason Guichard (Melville, NY/Hills East) and Bill Jansen (West Hampton Beach, NY/West Hampton) threw 17 innings with no hits allowed in a Skyline Conference doubleheader against Manhattanville (14-12, 7-4 Skyline). This was a well-pitched battle by both teams with a combined seven hits given up overall. Guichard threw the first no-hitter for Farmingdale since their move to the NCAA, striking out five and allowing only two walks. Jansen struck out 12 batters in his no-hitter and now holds a 0.30 ERA this season. The Rams were victorious in game one 1-0 with the game winning run scored by Ian Roche-Tilden (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) off an errant throw to third. The Valiants captured game two 2-1 in the 10th inning, as John Previti (Staten Island, NY) came home off a throwing error.
Farmingdale travels to Stevens Institute on Sunday, April 18th at 1pm for another conference doubleheader.

Farmingdale improved to 5-9, 3-5 Skyline with a conference win over King’s Point (1-15, 0-8) 8-4. The Rams led 6-0 going into the seventh. Farmingdale’s Wayde Anderson (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) opened up the scoring with a solo homerun in the third, while Robert Sorbera (Fresh Meadows, NY/Cardozo) brought in three runs with a bases loaded double in the sixth. Ian Roche-Tilden (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) and Anthony Scali (Massapequa Pk, NY/Massapequa) both stole 2 while on base in the seventh to put two more runs on the board for the Rams. Sorbera would add 2 more RBI’s to his plate in the eighth with a homerun that brought in Gary Block (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) from first.
The Mariners would score 4 runs in the final two innings as Adam Vanden (Longmont, CO/Longmont) drove in a run with a sac fly to right in the eighth. Alfred Giordano (Landenberg, PA/Salesianum) drove in one run in the ninth and Harlow Wood (Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap) connected for a 2 run single before the end of the inning.
Joseph Bono (Selden, NY/St. Anthony’s) improved his record to 2-0 on the mound with Greg Gredjikian (Copiague, NY/Copiague) picking up his third save.
Farmingdale will travel to Throgs Neck, NY to face conference opponent SUNY Maritime in a single game on Thursday, April 8th at 3pm.

The Rams fell to 4-7 as FDU-Florham took a non-conference victory 9-3. The score was tied 4-4 up until the seventh inning as the FDU Devils scored six runs in the final three innings to run away with the game. John Toolan (Three Bridges, NJ/Hunterdon Central) picked up his first win on the mound this season for the Devils as he pitched the final five scoreless innings allowing only two hits. Jim DaSilva (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) hit a solo homer in the fourth and finished 3-for-5 for FDU. Freshman Rob Pieruinanzi (New Hyde Park, NY/Herricks) was 1-for-2 for Farmingdale, with 2 RBI’s. Keith King (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) was 1-for-1 with an RBI double and three walks. The Rams travel to Staten Island on Thursday, April 1st for a doubleheader at 3:30pm.

Farmingdale dropped two games to Centenary College (11-3, 2-1 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference doubleheader and fell to 4-6, 2-3 Skyline this season. In game one, Nigel Archibald (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Indian Hills) hit a 2-run homer to put the Cyclones up 2-0 before the Rams scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1. In the sixth, Farmingdale came back with an RBI single by Keith King (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) to score Bill Jansen (West Hampton Beach, NY/West Hampton) and tie it up 2-2. Centenary answered with two runs in the seventh inning to take the conference victory 4-2. King and Jansen both went 1-for-3 for the Rams, while Gary Block (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base (5).
In game two, Robert Sorbera (Fresh Meadows, NY/Cardozo) gave the Rams a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Cyclones scored four runs in the last four innings to take the win 4-1. Sorbera went 1-for-3, RBI for the day, while Ian Roche-Tilden (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases (8).
Farmingdale faces FDU-Madison on Tuesday, March 30th at 4pm in a single home game.

Gary Block (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) hit a 2-out bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh leading Farmingdale (3-3) past Skyline opponent SUNY Old Westbury (4-4) 2-0. Jason Guichard (Melville, NY/HHH East) and Greg Gredjikian (Copiague, NY/Copiague) combined on a 6-hit shutout for Farmingdale. Gredjikian relieved Guichard with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning and pitched out of the jam to preserve Farmingdale’s lead. Guichard won his first game of the season and Gredjikian added his first save of the season for the Rams. The Rams, who face Old Westbury in a doubleheader this Saturday, host non-conference opponent New Jersey City tomorrow at 3pm in a makeup game.

Rams Suffer Third Loss of Season to Kean University

The Rams (2-3) fell to Kean University (6-5-1) in a non-conference single game. The game ended after seven innings with the score 25-1. Kean senior Dave Kopf (Branchburg, NJ) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning leading 20-1, which was enough for his team to take a commanding lead into their final two at-bats. Newcomer Gary Block (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) scored the only run for Farmingdale after a walk, stolen base and wild pitch in the fourth inning. Junior catcher Phil Corso (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) broke the no-hitter in the sixth with a hit through the infield, while freshman first baseman Bill Jansen (West Hampton Beach, NY/West Hampton) singled in the seventh inning. The Rams host conference rival Old Westbury on Wednesday, March 24th at 3pm.

Farmingdale (2-2) fell to Frostburg State (9-5) in two close games today, 6-5 and 2-1. In game one, the Rams were up 4-2 after three innings, only to have Frostburg score two runs in the fifth to balance out the score. Farmingdale chipped away towards a run in the sixth and took the lead 5-4, but Frostburg added two more in the last inning to gain the 6-5 edge over the Rams. Wayde Anderson (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Keith King (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI’s and Bill Jansen (W. Hampton Beach, NY/W. Hampton) went 2-for-3 and an RBI. Frostburg’s Chris McGarvey (Fallentimber, PA/Glendale) recorded his second win (2-0) and Frank Sutton (Clarksburg, WV/Robert C. Byrd) was awarded the save.
The second game was scoreless until the top of the fifth as Frostburg took a one run lead. The Rams were able to even the score in the sixth, but Frostburg scored the winning run in the seventh to complete the sweep. Brent Lutz (Toms Brook, VA/Central) picked up the win going six innings with 5 K’s and no walks. Collin Bednar (Millersville, MD/Glen Burnie) picked up the save. Pat Manganaro (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) finished 1-for-2 with one run scored. Ian Roche-Tilden (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Rams host a doubleheader against SUNY Utica-Rome on March 21st at noon.

Rams Force Run Rule in Both Games of Season Opener

Farmingdale (2-0) started the season off in style as they came out swinging to defeat Polytechnic (0-2) 18-8 and 11-1 in their first doubleheader of the season. Despite the chilling wind throughout the day, both games were halted after five innings by the 10-run rule giving the Rams their first two wins of the season. The Rams finished the day with 27 hits and 29 runs scored.
Farmingdale was just warming up in game one, they led 5-1 in the top of the fourth inning before Polytech scored 4 runs off just two hits to tie it up. The Rams struck back in the bottom of the fourth with a run scored by Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa), a 2RBI double by Robert Sorbera (Fresh Meadows, NY/Cardozo) and a 2-run homer by Keith King (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) to make it 10-5. Polytech mustered up 3 more runs in the fifth before the Rams finished it off with eight runs scored in ten at-bats. Ian Roche-Tilden (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four stolen bases (4). Sorbera finished 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI’s. King was 2-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBI’s. Joseph Bono (Selden, NY/St. Anthony’s) got the win and Greg Gredjikian (Copiague, NY/Copiage) pitched the last out for the save.
In game two, Farmingdale held Polytech to just one run in the fourth off and RBI double from Catanzaro (Rockville Centre, NY). In the bottom of the fifth, the Rams scored seven runs with no outs and 2 left on base to end the game 11-1. Gary Block (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) finished 2-for-3 with 2 stolen bases. Scali went 1-for-3 with 3 RBI’s. Roche-Tilden was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Keith Gottschalk (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) earned his first win after pitching 5 innings with 5 strikeouts, 6 walks and allowing only two hits.
