FSC Athletics Winter Update #7

New York, N.Y. - The Skyline Conference released the Winter weekly report #7 on Monday, January 17th, including Player of the Week, Rookie of the Week, Honor Roll and Conference statistics for men's and women's basketball. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) released their Track, Field and Rookie Athletes of the Week for men's and women's indoor track.

The indoor track teams competed at the TCNJ Lions Invitational on Saturday, January 15th at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York, N.Y.

Freshman Khadia Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) was tabbed the NJAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, while freshman Jovany Philippe (Huntington, N.Y.) was named the NJAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.

Jenkins earns her first career weekly honor as the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week. She posted a strong performance at the Lions' Indoor Invitational, setting a new personal record and AARTFC-qualifying mark in the high jump with a leap of 1.56 meters. She also threw shot put, placing eighth (third among Division III competitors) with a toss of 9.71 meters.

Philippe earns his first career weekly honor as the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week. Philippe put together two strong jumps at the Lions' Indoor Invitational. He placed fifth overall and second among Division III competitors in the high jump, leaping 1.80 meters. That ranks as the third-highest jump in the NJAC this season. He also finished second among D3 athletes (13th overall) in the long jump with a mark of 6.17 meters. That is currently the eighth-farthest in the NJAC so far this season.

The indoor track teams next will head to the Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. for the NYU Gotham Cup on Friday, January 25th.

 

Men's Basketball Update (8-6, 4-1 Skyline) - Skyline Full Report

Farmingdale State played a pair of conference games last week and picked up wins at Old Westbury, 95-81, and Purchase, 92-74.

Sophomore guard Nick Hurowitz (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Hurowitz averaged 22.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the field (17-of-34) and 6-of-11 beyond the 3-point arc. He went 4-of-6 from downtown on his way to a career-high 24 points Wednesday against Old Westbury and followed with a 21-point, 10-board double-double on Saturday versus Purchase.

The men's basketball team will play three Skyline Conference games this week: Tuesday vs. Merchant Marine @ 7:00 p.m., Thursday at Mount Saint Vincent @ 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at Maritime @ 1:00 p.m.

 

Women's Basketball Update (6-5, 4-4 Skyline) - Skyline Full Report

The women's basketball team played three Skyline games last week and fell to Mount Saint Vincent, 67-51, before earning wins against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, 88-79, and Sarah Lawrence, 76-45.

Freshman forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Mendoza shot 25-of-41 (.610) from the field with averages of 21.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per showing in the Rams' 2-1 week. On Wednesday against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn she registered 31 points (12-of-19 FG), 10 boards and three steals.

The women's basketball team plays three more conference games this week: Tuesday at Purchase @ 8:00 p.m., Thursday at Old Westbury (at Farmingdale State) @ 6:00 p.m. and Saturday vs. Merchant Marine @ 2:00 p.m.
